How to Drink Grappa the Italian Way: 8 Traditions

How to Drink Grappa the Italian Way: 8 Traditions

Italians do not shoot grappa. They pour about an ounce, hold the glass, and take twenty minutes over it.

If your only reference for grappa is a rough shot at the end of a long dinner, that is a version of the drink, but it is not the Italian one. Here is how it is actually served, and what each habit is for.

Afterthe meal, never before

1. Grappa is a digestif, not an aperitif

The Italian word is digestivo, and the timing is the whole point. An aperitif is light and comes before the meal to open the appetite. A digestif is stronger and comes after it, when the plates are cleared and nobody is in a hurry to leave the table.

That is why grappa turns up at the end of long dinners and almost never at the start.

2. Sip it, do not shoot it

At 40 to 50 percent alcohol, grappa is not built for speed. Held in the mouth for a second, it opens into whatever the grape gave it: pear and white flowers from a Moscato base, something drier and more herbal from Nebbiolo, ripe dark fruit from Cabernet Sauvignon.

Shoot it and you taste the alcohol. Sip it and you taste the vineyard.

3. Room temperature or lightly chilled

Aged grappa is served at room temperature, around 18 to 20 degrees Celsius, because warmth releases the aroma. Young unaged grappa is often served cooler, straight from the fridge or briefly from the freezer, which tightens the alcohol and makes it easier to drink.

The Florida rule

In a hot climate, chilled wins. Twenty minutes in the freezer before serving takes the heat off the spirit without killing the honey and fruit.

4. The glass matters more than you would think

The traditional grappa glass is a small tulip: narrow at the base, wider in the middle, tapered at the rim so the aroma collects instead of escaping. A wine glass works. A shot glass actively does not, because it puts your nose straight into the alcohol.

If you have nothing tulip-shaped, use the smallest wine glass in the cupboard and pour less than you think.

5. Caffè corretto: espresso, corrected

Finish an espresso, leave the last centimetre in the cup, pour a small measure of grappa into it and drink it in one go. The name means corrected coffee, and in parts of northern Italy it is simply how coffee ends.

Grappa is the classic choice. Sambuca and brandy also appear, but grappa is the original.

6. Every region pours something different

Grappa is defined by the grape, and Italy has hundreds. Veneto works with Prosecco pomace and gives something light and floral. Piedmont uses Nebbiolo and Barolo pomace for a firmer, drier style. Friuli built a reputation on single-variety bottlings.

Papa's Honey Grappa starts from Cabernet Sauvignon pomace in Miami, Florida, then adds orange blossom honey. Same method, different fruit, different climate.

7. It belongs to celebrations, not just dinners

Weddings, christenings, birthdays, the end of the harvest. A bottle comes out, small glasses go round the table, and someone says something. Grappa was farm-made for most of its life, which is exactly why it carries that role: it was the drink you already had.

8. Who you drink it with is the tradition

Nobody drinks grappa alone in a hurry. It is a table drink, poured when the meal is over and the conversation is not.

Small glass. One ounce.
After the meal, not before.
Twenty minutes, not twenty seconds.

Everything else is regional detail.

What to serve with grappa

Nothing, ideally. It is meant to follow food rather than accompany it. If you want something on the table, keep it small and bitter or sharp: dark chocolate, a hard aged cheese, plain biscotti, espresso.

For the sweeter honey style, citrus works. A twist of lemon peel over the glass lifts the whole thing.

Try it the Italian way

Papa's Honey Grappa is 750ml at 45.5% ABV, distilled twice in Miami, Florida from Cabernet Sauvignon pomace and infused with Florida orange blossom honey. The honey makes it the easiest way into the category if you have never poured grappa before.

Handcrafted by master distiller Brian Battle, winner of Discovery's Moonshiners: Master Distiller, Double Gold at the 2026 SIP Awards and Silver at the 2025 Las Vegas Global Spirit Awards.
