Grappa Questions, Answered

The questions people ask before their first pour, and a few that come up after it.

What is grappa?

Grappa is an Italian spirit distilled from grape pomace, the skins and seeds left behind after winemaking. Papa's starts from Cabernet Sauvignon pomace and double distills it in Miami for a cleaner, smoother spirit.

What is honey grappa?

Honey grappa is grappa infused with honey. Papa's uses Florida orange blossom honey and a touch of natural honeycomb, which rounds grappa's fiery edge into something smooth and aromatic while the grape character holds firm underneath.

How do you drink grappa?

Traditionally, grappa is enjoyed neat as a digestivo after dinner, or chilled straight from the freezer. Papa's Honey Grappa also mixes beautifully. Try it in a Papa's Honey Mule, a Honey Spritz, or stirred into a Golden Goddess.

What is the alcohol content of Papa's Honey Grappa?

Papa's Honey Grappa is 45.5% ABV (91 proof), bottled at 750ml.

What does honey grappa taste like?

Orange blossom honey lifts first, over ripe Cabernet Sauvignon grape at the base. Double distillation keeps it smooth, with honeyed sweetness, a touch of honeycomb, and a balanced, aromatic finish.

Is grappa a digestif or an aperitif?

A digestif. Aperitifs are light and served before the meal to open the appetite; digestifs are stronger and served after it. Grappa has held the after-dinner slot in Italy for centuries, and at 45.5% ABV Papa's is poured in a small glass, about an ounce.

What is a digestif?

A digestif is a spirit drunk at the end of a meal rather than the start. Grappa, amaro, brandy and cognac all qualify. The idea is a short, warm pour that closes dinner instead of opening it.

How is grappa different from brandy?

Brandy is distilled from wine or whole fruit. Grappa is distilled from pomace, the skins and seeds left after the grapes are pressed, which gives it a drier, more grape-forward character. Both are Old World digestifs, but grappa starts from what winemaking leaves behind.

Can I use honey grappa the way I use honey whiskey?

Yes, and it behaves differently in the glass. Honey whiskey brings oak and vanilla; honey grappa brings grape and orchard fruit. Anywhere a honey whiskey cocktail calls for a sweet base spirit, Papa's works, with a lighter, more aromatic finish.
